Ian AlexanderDr. Ian Alexander MB

Ian Alexander MB, is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio where he is Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery. Ian trained in Orthopaedic surgery in Canada at the University of Western Ontario and did his fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1993 he was award the Humana Award for outstanding research by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and he presently serves on that organization's board of directors. Ian has extensive experience speaking nationally in the US and internationally including invitations as a keynote speaker at national and international meetings in Canada, England, Argentina, Belgium, Switzerland, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia and others. His interest in information technology led to his starting a software company in the mid 1990s and currently the formation of an international foot and ankle data center for the analysis of outcomes of foot and ankle therapeutic interventions is his primary objective. At Ohio State he cares for a number of high caliber athletes and has a significant commitment to the education of medical students and residents. In addition he has a major role in leveraging Ohio State's investment in electronic medical records to enhance physician efficiency while at the same time improving patient care. Ian has been married for 35 years and has 4 children. His recreational time is spent biking and in winter he likes to head to the western US to ski.


 
Dr. Peter Bernius   Dr. Peter Bernius

Dr. Peter Bernius finished his studies of human medicine at the University of Heidelberg, specialist Registrar for Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine in 1988. He has been a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Freiburg University since 1996 and Head of Department at Schön Clinic Munich Harlaching since 2001.
 
Dr. Bernius is a member of a number of bodies including German Association of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery, German Professional Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, German Society for Sports Medicine and Prevention, German Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and Association of Southern German Orthopaedists.

He has been working in the field of neuro rehabilitation of CP children and patient after stroke. Early on he has done studies in the field of Botulinum and its use in orthopaedics. Within the last 10 years he has been working in the field of functional correction of feet deformities. Dr. Bernius has also published widely as well as in several books including G.K. Stalla: Therapeutic Guide brain damage - Interdisciplinary aspects of traumatic brain injury and stroke, Orthopedic surgery to correct deformities secondary to brain injury in adulthood and Torsional deformities in children with cerebral palsy and their surgical treatment, Orthopaedic Releases´.

His main interest is how to avoid functional deficiencies and preserve and increase functional abilities. He lectures particularly on the topic of complex pediatric orthopaedic therapy regimes, in which he has a particular interest.


 
Prof Joshua BurnsAssoc Prof Joshua Burns

Associate Professor Joshua Burns combines research and clinical training in Podiatry, Physiotherapy and Neurology. During 2000 he received a 1st Class Honours Degree with the University Medal for Podiatry. His Honours research established risk factors for lower limb injury in amateur to elite triathletes. During 2006 he received a PhD in Physiotherapy. His thesis established assessment and treatment methods for foot problems of adults with nerve and muscle disorders. During 2009 he completed a National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC) Postdoctoral Fellowship in the field of Neurology evaluating therapies for children with nerve and muscle diseases such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. During this time he received the Young Tall Poppy Science Award for excellence in Podiatry and Paediatric Neurology in 2008 and was awarded the National Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship for 2009 to work in the USA.

Assoc Prof Burns has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in the past 5 years alone, including lead-author papers in Lancet Neurology, Brain and Neurology. He has attracted over $10.5M in local and international funding, including a recent NHMRC grant to establish the National Centre for Research Excellence in Neuromuscular Disorders (2012-2016).

Assoc Prof has led seven randomised controlled trials and conducted six systematic reviews. In these trials he has evaluated diverse interventions such as orthoses, footwear, stretching, strengthening, ascorbic acid and botulinum toxin. He is an editor of the Cochrane Collaboration, and regularly reviews for over 30 journals and international granting bodies.

In 2011, Assoc Prof Joshua Burns was awarded a 4-year NHMRC Career Development Fellowship to improve the measurement and management of children and adults with nerve and muscle disorders at The University of Sydney. Assoc Prof Joshua Burns is also Director of the Paediatric Gait Analysis Service of NSW and Head of Clinical Research at the Institute for Neuroscience and Muscle Research, The Children's Hospital at Westmead.


 
Dr. Wolfgang LaubeDr. Wolfgang Laube

Dr. Wolfgang Laube is head of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the public hospitals Feldkirch and Rankweil in Vorarlberg since July 2010. In the medical team of this department he was senior physician in the last 9 years before that. He started his professional career 1976 with the further education to the specialist for sports medicine.

Since 1983 up to today he works scientifically different aspects of the function or the disturbance of the sensorimotor system by healthy persons and orthopeadic and traumatologic patients. 1990 he qualified as a university lecturer and became specialist for physiology. Since the same year his main field of work is the function diagnostics and the development of active therapy programs in the rehabilitation of orthopaedic and traumatologic patients from the scientific and practical point of view.

Between 1993 and 2000 he was responsible for the clinical research and the development of active therapy programmes in a great rehabilitation clinic. In the last 6 years he wrote 3 textbooks published by Thieme with the main topics physiology, pathophysiology, function diagnostics and ageing process of the sensorimotor system and the biological effects of inactivation or immobilisation on one site and the effects of the medical training process on the other site.


 
Dr. L.K ShankhdharDr. L.K Shankhdhar

60 years old Senior Endocrinologist from India has post graduated in Internal Medicine, Radiology and Nutrition and focussed on Podiatry. He received Visiting Fellowship along with "Medical Excellence Award" from Harvard Medical International, the International arm of Harvard Medical School (Boston) and visited Joslin Clinic as a part of the Award. He holds the credit of establishing North India's still only exclusive Diabetes Clinic in 1992 with an improvised diabetic foot care Unit. He has a tremendous record of publishing more than 600 public utility articles on various aspects of diabetes, including 50 articles on diabetic foot care in Hindi and English in reputed national dailies and health magazines, besides 5 voluminous books for patients, including one 100 paged book on Diabetes related foot problems. He published 20 scientific papers in indexed National and International Journals. Also presented abstracts in most International conferences on diabetes including ADA, EASD and IDF.

As a Faculty speaker, he was been invited by Wounds International, held at Capetown in March, 2011 and 2nd International Diabetic Foot Conference, being held on 24th and 25th September at Dubai.

He has organized 6 national level diabetes updates for physicians and one short course in Diabetology for young physicians. On coming 16th October, he is organizing a national level conference, titled "Diabetes Update For Clinicians (DUFC)-2011." Highlight of the event is a 6 hour parallel diabetic foot training course for physicians.

He has founded a non governmental organization, named UP Madhumeh Association and is undertaking massive diabetes related social work through this organization. A non profit diabetes and diabetic foot hospital is under construction at Lucknow through his efforts. He also intends to conduct short courses on Diabetes and Podiatry for physicians and paramedics in that hospital.
